Betty T Doll, 2010, Never Never Land #62, Etched glass
American Neo Surrealist Betty T. Doll grew up in USA and first came to Australia to pursue her postgraduate education. Part-Dutch and part-Chinese, Betty is renowned for her inspired use of doll/toy imagery, originally developed during her Post Graduate Studies in both Fine Arts and Visual Arts at the Group of Eight Universities - a coalition of leading Australian universities, intensive in research and comprehensive in general and professional education.
The Lost Boys presents another visually subtle yet haunting body of work and includes a new collection of hand etched glass work and concept drawings aptly named ‘ice gothic’ Never Never Land series. Each ghostly doll portrait is drawn from dream-like narratives grounded in the Freudian uncanny concept (or the gothic in Lacanian terms). Betty extracts elements of disappearing reality and fragmented existence to reflect a sense of loss, isolation and disconnection inspired by recent studies of the contemporary gothic movement.
Acknowledgement is given to Dennis Hughes (Victoria, Australia) and Master Visions (Minnesota, USA) for their invaluable contribution to this project
The opening night will feature a solo guro lolita ballet by Sacha Lee Flanagan, produced by Visible Dance and In a celebratory gesture by this artist, a lucky number draw on the night will gift the recipient with a custom Christmas themed glass plate by the artist.
Betty has an extensive exhibition history including 13 solo exhibitions as well as numerous group exhibitions throughout Australia and the USA. Her work features in private collections nationally and internationally.
