Celebrated artist and octogenarian Lidija Dombrovska Larsen’s latest paintings offer a rich experience of colour and shape as she translates the relationship between emotion and environment. ‘Stories of Our Time’ include more figurative elements as deep pigments assemble and blend beyond her abstract shapes.

Prior to arriving to Australia from Denmark 1983 Lidija studied painting, sculpture and graphic art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1951-55. She advanced her studies in the studios of renowned artists Fernand Leger and S.W Hayters ‘Atelier 17’ in France.

It was during the 50’s that Lidija established herself as one of the first abstract expressionists in Denmark. The fact that she was a frontrunner of abstract expressionism and a woman, contributed to her success and Lidija’s art became highly distinguished and collectable.

With a career spanning over 60 years in 2 continents, the methodology of Lidija’s art practice revolves around spontaneity as her works develop from one painting to the next guided by compositions of classical music masters.

Lidija worked at WA’s Curtin University from 1988-92 as a tutor in the arts department. She has authored 20 books and novels, in her native language , including poetry and art history and is herself the subject of an monograph detailing over 50 years of her art practice, compiled by an eminent art professor in Latvia.

With an impressive history of more than 150 exhibitions spanning across Europe, USA, Canada, China and Australia, Lidija’s work is held in a myriad of public and private collections, museums and art foundations worldwide. In Perth she is represented in the collections of the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University and a majority of Perth’s major hospital art collections.

Lidija Dombrovska Larsen is an, artist, author and poet: a woman whose life and achievements are a testament to her enduring commitment to the arts.
