‘Recollections Of Pasture And Bush' by Jim Duddles & Dale Couper

Exhibiting together for the first time, Duddles and Couper demonstrate their affiliation with the land in visually contrasting fashion.

Duddles’ aerial observations of the rural farmland of the Great Southern are informed by an attempt to develop a personal visual language to express the essence of the Australian landscape. Although not strictly pictorial, his paintings endeavour to capture this environment and the addition of calligraphic marks are gestural recordings of his presence in the landscape.

Duddles is also working on a series of sculptural forms to complement the paintings. The forms are derived from the Kangaroos that he encounters on his property on a daily basis. The Kangaroo is an iconic symbol that is strongly associated with Australian identity. These sculptures are ‘faceless’ and reflect the ever changing and somewhat indefinable nature of that identity.

Duddles was recently shortlisted as a finalist for the 2008 and 2009 City of Albany Art Prize and the prestigious 2008 Fleurieu Art Prize for landscape painting.

Dale Coupers magnificent large scale paintings are a celebration of the abundance of wildflowers which can be found in the Australian bush. Couper presents each wildflower in a dazzling ‘close up’ view, a stark contrast to Duddles aerial vision. Despite having spent many years in the bush, Dale continues to be struck by the vastness and isolation of our landscape and loves nothing more that to lose himself in the quest for his next subject.

Couper will also present a series of ‘soundscapes’ to accompany his works. With a different soundscape for every painting and each piece composed in the note of ‘E’, the sounds will merge and meld together to form an arresting and hauntingly beautiful wave of synthesized chorus as the viewer travels through each room of the exhibition.
