‘OUTPOURINGS’

A unique book launch and exhibition chronicling the extraordinary art practice of expressionist action painter Caroline Christie features at Elements Art Gallery in February.

Entitled ‘Outpourings’ it describes her painting process, the simple act of allowing paint to be intuitively applied. This process could be described as a dance, it is immediate and responsive, recording her subconscious ‘outpourings’ as if the act itself were alive, unwilling to reveal itself until the final moment when she steps back and views the finished work in its entirety.
Having immigrated to Australia in 1997, Caroline’s zeal for abstract expressionist painting became apparent as a response to the death of her father the following year. Overwhelmed by a feeling of separation and loss from her culture, family and father she turned to psychologists, spiritual teachers, and the metaphysical, but discovered that by exploring the connection to ‘self’ utilising circles as a process of restoration to connection that nothing has revealed more about her truth than her personal journey through the painting process.

The ‘Outpourings’ exhibition coincides with the launch of Caroline’s first book ’Processing Paint: the Life And Works Of Caroline Christie’ which comprises of an account of her art practice in recent years. With past paintings titled ‘Do I Blend In’ and ‘Exposed For The Briefest Moment’ Caroline demonstrates a disarming vulnerability and compulsion to share her story with others utilising a universal visual language. Her often large scale canvasses speak of intimate moments and ‘being present’ articulated via a sea of merging, swirling pigment which culminates in a visual flood of colour and texture.

Originally hailing from South Africa, Christies works are held in numerous public and private collections in Australia and internationally.
Opening on Saturday the 13th of February, the launch will be attended by the author, arts writer Rebecca deRooy and Editor Iwona Polski.

‘Outpourings’ runs until the 28th of February 2010.
