Western Australian Artist Philip Berry showcases an arresting array of landscapes and regional street scenes in his latest exhibition at Elements Art Gallery entitled ‘Metropolis And Other Stories.’
Utilising a technique whereby each piece is painted in sequential layers, Berry’s carefully constructed canvases can be best described upon viewing as reminiscent of the impressionists of old (Van Gogh) and Australian painters Boyd, Percival and Harald Vike.
Berry describes himself as ‘a city person who lives and paints in the country.’ Preferring to paint on location outdoors, his stories reflect an emotional response to the environment he’s in at the time be it a townscape or landscape, capturing the atmosphere of the place at that particular time. This does however, involve working very quickly before the light changes. Berry’s immersion in two worlds means that his works offer the unique and balanced viewpoint of one that has resided in both city and country.
Although some works contain a narrative, Philip encourages the viewer to draw their own interpretations revealing that his figures are a combination of the people he sees at the time and his own personal narrative.
With a professional practice spanning nearly 30 years, this multi award winning artist has recently been awarded the First Prize in the inaugural 2008 ‘Signature South West ’ Busselton Art Award and the ‘Award for Excellence’ at the 2009 ‘South West Times Survey’ at the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery . He is represented in numerous state collections including the Art Gallery of Western Australia, The Kerry Stokes Collection and numerous University, Hospital and Council collections to name a few and has recently completed a three month residency at Bunbury Regional Art Gallery.
‘Metropolis And Other Stories’ runs until 16th August.
