Brooke Zeligman, Untitled Series II (Midnight Blue Reduction), Sand cast glass, MDF, Autopaint, LED lighting

Brooke Zeligman’s sculptural practice incorporates performance, glass and mixed media.

Brooke is the recipient of the 2009 Off The Wall: Art Sydney Award and in the previous year she received a Janet Holmes à Court Artist’s Grant.

In 2007 she was awarded both an Australian Postgraduate Award and an ECU Excellence Award.  She is currently completing a PhD.

Born in Brisbane, residing in Canberra and having travelled extensively, Zeligman worked for many years as a cook and views her practice not as art making but as recipe making, in which different flavours, textures and ingredients are combined.

‘Fragile Inheritance’ is an investigation that engages with historical and contemporary perspectives of female behavior through lived experience. On show are two bodies of labour intensive works that reflect the continuing importance of the hand made within contemporary art and feminist praxis. Juxtaposed against her range of lacy, dysfunctional domestic creations is a backdrop of carefully constructed works that cross the boundary between art and functional design. Ancient glass casting techniques of pate de verre have been combined with construction materials, polymers and LED lighting. The potency of the handmade, the focus on materiality and references to the cultural construction of femininity and motherhood is continued through these slickly finished works.

Zeligman’s approach is autobiographical at its heart – part pastiche, part myth making, part recipe making - it traces pathways through memory and desire, and attempts to challenge culturally prescribed values in relation to the body and maternity.
