Delicate Earth
Elements Art Gallery will officially launch their new space in Dalkeith with an exhibition by award winning local artist Brian Simmonds.
“Dear Earth….” highlights Brians’ veneration for nature through a series of lush canvases depicting forrest floors contrasted with paintings of suburban gardens, and as such, presenting the viewer with images of the earth’s complexion in its many forms.
His canvases offer an intimacy with the subject rather than the observation of something spectacular. The immediate surroundings volunteer a personal space and there’s an emotion and a sense of being included in an interrelation between human being and nature.
The beauty in perceptions, the visualizing and imagining in the accidental compositions of sticks, leaves and sandy patches of the forrest floor is most compelling to him as a painter. “The earth’s surface and the twinkling brightness of the foliage is my subject,” he states, “I describe my surroundings through the language of painting.”
In the human realm, Brian acknowledges that a cultivated nature is at the same time an intuitive collaboration and a conscious control that determines the colours and compositions of what becomes a suburban garden, uniting human-kind with nature. The wild nature is not entirely external but part of the nature of the gardener, and the garden, as an extension of that, is a kind of expression of reverence for the earth.
Brian feels that his work has more resonance now, than even as recently as ten years ago. As the realization grows that we all need to care for the earth, he feels that his work is a timely reminder that we ignore nature at our peril and need to appreciate it just the way that it is.
With an art practice spanning three decades, this respected local painter has exhibited widely and won numerous prizes and awards for drawing, oil painting and mixed media. His works can be found in many private and public collections
