Multi award winning Perth based artist, David Giles, began painting eighteen years ago after nearly drowning in the Southern Ocean near Walpole. This life changing near death experience consolidated his aspirations of an artist’s life and strongly influences the imagery of his paintings even to this day.
Reflecting on this pivotal event Giles says, "Once I let go of the struggle, the experience became intensely ecstatic and there was a sense of complete calm, tranquillity and curiosity. The whole history of my art practice continues to be influenced by this experience as I work to reconnect, through art making, with that luminous sense of a mystical spiritual reality” As such, his paintings sing with metaphysical undertones.
A veteran of 33 solo exhibitions and further exhibitions in New York, Sydney Melbourne and Perth, Giles is a renowned art curator, has been the recipient of over 26 art awards and teaches philosophy, history and creative arts at Murdoch University.
Giles has been listed a WA Leader for his " achievements. leadership and contribution to the community" and was recently appointed by the Government of WA as an Ambassador for the Disability Services Commission to promote ‘welcoming and inclusive communities for everyone’.
‘Cloudscapes’ is an exhibition of David’s latest expression of the exquisite beauty in our everyday.
