Influences from my architecture
and design background show themselves within my paintings: structure, texture,
balance and line.
On the physical level I explore
the process of painting; the effect of time on matter - with areas scraped and scratched, ‘past’
layers are revealed or hidden…likened to the effects of weathering or
oxidization, a frame of history and a reference to change being inevitable.
On the mental planes I am
fascinated with the subjectivity of perception: duality and ambiguity; the
uniqueness of the individual.
Purposeful or considered
elements are juxtaposed by using my hands directly on the canvas, mixing
substances and pigments to creating the unpredicted or spontaneous. Contrasts
are balanced or exaggerated in physical expression and subject.
In the last years I have been
painting circles - forms that float, hang, interlock, jostle, stand alone and
fall. The response these varying moments have on the viewer is provocative and
completely subjective. I believe my
outpouring of circles is an expression and communication of my experiences in a
universal visual language. I have been told that the ancients used circles to
represent individuals. This is interesting as, to me, circles are a powerful
Archetypal symbol of life and the ever repeating circles thereof.
Likened to the enjoyment I get
from designing I relish in the creative process of painting, however the key
difference is that the medium of painting is freer. Abandoning some of the
restraints of logic and expectation I appreciate painting as conceptual,
subjective and with no obligation for justification.
