Opening 12 September at 6.30pm “Three Journeys” An exhibition by Lyn Franke, Yolande Bennett, Peta Miller 12th – 27th September 2009
Elements Art Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of contemporary painting by three exciting Western Australian artists. Three Journeys follows the creative pathways of three women influenced by uniquely Australian environments, atmospheres and landscapes. Through highly explorative processes of rich textural development in their paintings, they pursue evocations of a distinctive sense of place. Harshness belies fragility in Lyn Franke’s new multimedia works for “Three Journeys”, images incorporating a broad range of media including acrylic, silk, paper, fibres, metallic threads, gold leaf and sand. Through this eclectic blend of textures, Lyn endeavours to evoke the colour and feel of Western Australia with its unique shapes, surfaces, patterns, colour and sense of fragility. Lyn has a well established reputation for her stark yet delicately atmospheric and subtle interpretations of the Australian landscape. Yolande Bennett’s abstract paintings are created from an instinctive process of applying many layers to the work, accumulating depth and richness similarly to memories and experiences. Yolande’s background in interior design lends a strong human sensitivity to the colour, form and composition of the images, a visual testimony to the exposure of humans to their surrounding environments throughout their lifespan. Peta Miller’s striking images are also the result of many layers built up and etched into, as the artist endeavours to capture essences of experience over more literal interpretations, be it a place, a moment in time, a feeling, or a memory. Evocative and vivid, Peta’s work employs a mixture of oil pastels, acrylics and charcoal to create bold, tactile images of substance and resonance.
